Photographs by Ed Jackson

Here's a set of selections from A Collection of Icelandic Photographs in slide show format. The first, and main, list of slide shows provides links to each one in .wmv format, playable using Windows Media Player. The second list is identical to the first, except that the slide shows are one-quarter the size of the originals, to reduce download speed. Visitors to the site who do not have Windows Media Player may, instead, view the smaller versions of the slide shows in Flash format. There is also a gallery showing around 120 of my favourite photos: Landscapes of Iceland.

Most recent update: December 6, 2008

Reykjavík and Akureyri: Scenes from Iceland's two main cities, Reykjavík and Akureyri, are shown in this slide show. Both cities have grown and changed since the pictures were taken, but these shots from the 1980s give a good idea of the character of these places.

Music: "Smooching," by Mark Knopfler, from the CD, Local Hero.

Western Iceland: From the South-West to the Westfjords: This is a compilation of photographs from several trips to Iceland, beginning just north of Reykjavík and ending at Ísafjörður, at almost the north-west tip of the island.

A Boat Trip in Ísafjörður: In May of 1985 I spent a few days in the Westfords town of Ísafjörður, during which I took a day-trip on the boat Fagranes, which used to visit many small settlements in the Ísafjörður region in the spring. An enjoyable aspects of the trip was the unexpected company of 40 teenagers from the nearby town of Bólungarvík.

Music: "The Long Road," by Mark Knopfler, from the CD, Cal.

Northern Iceland (1): Vatnsdalur, Blöndudalur, and Skagaheiði.
Northern Iceland (2): Öxnadalur, Grímsey, and Goðafoss.
Northern Iceland (3): Eyjafjörður in Winter, Spring, and Summer.

Mývatn and Námaskarð: A slide show of the Mývatn area includes pictures of the hot springs and boiling mud pools at Námaskarð. This is one of the main tourist spots in Iceland, and is characterized by a bleak, almost lunar, landscape.

Music: "Stargazer" / "The Rocks and the Water," by Mark Knopfler, from the CD, Local Hero.

Eastern and South-Eastern Iceland: From Dettifoss to Vatnajökull: The photos of this part of Iceland were taken during a road trip around the island in 1975.
Southern and South-Western Iceland: From Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Þingvellir: The final leg of the road trip around Iceland, in this case using photos from three visits to Iceland, two in mid-summer and the third at the end of winter.

Icelandic Textures: This is a small compilation of unusual and contrasting textures found in the natural features of the Icelandic landscape. Though the terrain is rugged and often apparently barren it nevertheless supports plant life in unlikely places. The sea and its effect on rocks are a constant fascination.

Music: "The Search," by Dougie MacLean, from the CD, The Search.

Iceland In Winter: Most of the pictures of Iceland on the web were taken during the summer. Here are some exceptions. Iceland In Winter is a slide show consisting of about two dozen pictures of Reykjavík, Akureyri, and the countryside taken during vists I made to Iceland in February and April.

Music: "And On The Third Day," by Gary Burton, from the CD, Country Roads And Other Places.

Iceland Panoramas: Alternative views of some of the scenes, made either pasting together two or more adjacent slides, or cropping single slides to give the illusion of a wide-angle view.

Music: "The Sixties Vigil," by Dougie MacLean, from the CD, The Search.

Iceland in Black-&-White: A different interpretation of the Icelandic landscape using some of the photographs selected from the other slide shows.

Music: The rather mournful musical background is Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, adapted by The Canadian Brass.

Landscapes of Iceland: The Best of A Collection of Icelandic Photographs: This slide show contains what I think are my best (or just my favourite!) photos from the other slide shows. These photos, plus a few more, can be viewed in a gallery, Landscapes of Iceland.
Alternative Formats:
Smaller Versions of the Slide Shows
Because several of the files listed above are quite large -- and therefore may sometimes be slow to download -- I have added a set of WMV files for Windows Media Player at about one-quarter of the size of the main slide shows listed above:
Flash Versions of the Slide Shows
These Flash-format versions of the slide shows have been added for the benefit of site visitors who do not have Windows Media Player installed on their computers:
